Self-portrait with green screen

 
  • Take and/or gather a minimum of 25 images of objects, places and people that are important to you. If you find an image on the internet, be sure to grab the URL for it to cite your source.
  • Take a look at your green screen images and pick one to use.

Discuss:

  • Remove green
    • Open green screen image with GIMP.
    • Layer -> Transparency -> Add Alpha Channel.
    • Image -> Scale Image - specify a height or width of 1024
    • Repeat following steps until most of the green is gone:
      • Use Select by Color Tool and select green color
      • Edit -> Clear
      • Select -> None
    • Get rid of any remaining green with eraser tool
    • Use Magic Wand & select transparent area. 
    • If you see artifacts selected in the transparent area then select Select -> Invert. Use eraser on those areas. Repeat this step until no more artifacts remain in transparent area when you select it.
  • Add to background
    • Use Magic Wand & select transparent area.
    • Select Select -> Invert
    • Select Edit -> Copy
    • Find an appropriate background. Use Creative Commons Search. Save background on your computer.
    • Open background image with GIMP.
    • Select Edit -> Paste as -> New Layer.
    • If you image is too large, select Scale Tool and use corners to shrink.
    • Use Move Tool to move image to where you want it.
    • You can also use the Eraser tool to have some background element show through
  • Add more layers
    • You can copy more images in as separate layers.
  • Experiment with Filters
    • You can use a filter on any layer. Remember to have your layers menu open, so you can select the right one.
  • Save your work!
    • At end of class make sure you Save as to save with .XCF extension. This will save all your layer work.
    • Also Export as and save with .PNG extension.
